Ridding ourselves of all anxiety and stress is impossible. Stress and anxiety are natural responses to thoughts and events. In fact, some stress and anxiety are what contribute to our desires to better our families, take caution when crossing the street, as well as problem solve and plan for situations. However, stress and anxiety can become unbearable when we feel unable to control our thoughts and feelings and sometimes result in panic attacks. To reduce these undesirable and at times debilitating experiences, we need to recognize what is happening in our brains and how to regain control.
In therapy, you will understand how to recognize when you are starting to become stressed or anxious, increase your awareness of the changes that occur within your body and mind when under stress, learn and apply evidenced-based strategies to increase self-regulation, process situations and experiences, engage in cognitive restructuring, and decrease moments hyperarousal.
Many people experience and perceive trauma differently. Trauma is associated with the body’s response to the situation that has occurred versus the event itself. This is the reason two people can experience a similar situation but have completely different responses. Challenges with traumatic situations and triggers can impact your ability to focus, make decisions, recall information, prepare for the future, display self-control, and regulate yourself emotionally. Past trauma can contribute to unhealthy relationships with others, addiction problems, and difficulties managing anger. In therapy you will learn how to regulate and rescue yourself emotionally, work though the traumatic experience to promote healing, engage in cognitive restructuring, and foster future growth and resilience.
Whether it is sexual based or substance related, addictions can be difficult to disclose due to fear, guilt, and shame. Addictions form due to various reasons whether from powerless situations, trauma, environmental factors, or genetic factors. The goal in therapy is to assist you with working through challenges, display self-control, heal, and continue personal growth. The focus in our sessions will be to increase your understanding of the impact the addiction has on you mentally, address underlying factors, identify triggers that contribute to lapsing behaviors and relapse, address the behavioral cycle, apply effective interventions, and work towards maintenance of change. More detailed interventions will be implemented in sessions based upon your personal needs related but not limited to the type of addiction, offenses, legal involvement and requirements, the impact the addiction has on your level of functioning, and whether there are victims.
